Introducing the Newark Evening News Digitization Project

There is probably no more important resource for the study of Newark in the 20th century than the Newark Evening News, New Jersey’s newspaper of record. The Library is undertaking a new initiative to digitize the Newark Evening News.

1883-1923 is now available online: https://www.digifind-it.com/newark/

Projected cost: 1926-1937: $20,000 (half covered by Robert Treat Fund); 1938-1972: $100,000-$125,000

We will need your help! To donate, put “Newark Evening News” in the notes field.

Newspapers

The biggest Newark papers are the Newark Daily Advertiser (19th century) the Newark News (also known as the Newark Evening News or Newark Sunday News, 1883-1972) and the Star Ledger (became the largest paper after the News). The Newark Library has a near-complete run of all three papers.

Microformed papers below are not indexed or full-text searchable unless otherwise specified (e.g. Newark Evening News has a full run index for most articles 1914-1972 [obits not death notices], Star Ledger after 1971 has a partial index).

For reference questions, research services, and to order copies, call the New Jersey Information Center at (973) 733-7775 or email njreference@npl.org.

Note: For non-microfilmed or digitized periodicals see A Partial List of Periodicals at the library and our catalog.

Most runs are incomplete

Newsbank/GenealogyBank both require a paid subscription to view. Certain titles are available via these sources at the library.

This is not a complete index to digitized New Jersey papers but includes some of the most used in our reference room and significant titles.

Papers that have been digitized by the library can be found here
